Stop Writing Like An Alien

How would you react if an Alien started talking on the other side of the phone, after a random number called you?

You would hang up immediately, especially if they were trying to sell you something, right?

Well, this is the case with a bunch of people, who are trying to reach prospects through cold Emails, Meta Ads, and any other written context.

Their ‘copy’ (business synonym for piece of text) is hard to understand, foggy and a word salad. It has a bunch of words in it, but no meaning behind them. Let me give you an example:

‘Client acquisition vortices spiral through the ether of lead-gen constellations, as networking tendrils grasp at the synergy of pipeline expansion, propelling prospects into the gravitational pull of conversion galaxies’

Yeeeeeees, this was written by Ai and saved me around 20 seconds.

Noooooooo, you should not use this, because no one with an intact brain is going to understand what you’re saying.

This is the much simpler version of it:

‘I’m going to help you find potential leads to turn into customers.’

See? Sooooooooo much better.

Simple, straight forward, and it passed the BAR test.

“BAR Test? Why Should I Go To A nightclub?”

Spoiler: Nooooooo, this is not about clubs and parties.

The BAR Test has been around for years, decades, centuries and it’s going to stay for a while. (Well, until dinosaurs return or Aliens conquer Earth)

Simply put, it’s a test that makes sure your copy looks like a person wrote them, as if they were actually talking to someone.

If you read the example sentences again, there’s no way you would say the first one to an actual human being. Whereas the second one fits into an everyday conversation.

That’s what the BAR Test is about.

“So How Should I Use The BAR Test?”

It’s originally named BAR Test, because it makes sure your copy is applicable for a conversation at a bar.

This doesn’t mean you should immediately go to a club and start chatting with drunk people about your copy.

You should read your copy out loud to yourself and decide whether you would actually say it to a person.

If something is weird coming out of your mouth, that should be a sign to change up the vocabulary used or the structure.

Don’t look at it as a negative, be grateful to be able to improve your copy.
